AED Buying Guide

All AEDs are efficient at helping when a patient is in cardiac arrest. However, some features are better suited to certain users. Here are our recommendations:

Lay rescuers and general public

For ease of use in an emergency, we recommend fully automatic AEDs, such as the 360P, the 500P and the CR2.

Fully automatic AEDs do not have a shock button. That means the user will be warned that a shock will be delivered if the device advises it. One less step means that it is easier to use for people with little to no training.

Public places & environments with lots of children

For public places and environments with lots of children, we recommend the CR2 for its ability to switch between adult and pediatric (child) mode at the push of a button, its real-time feedback and its bilingual support.

Experienced rescuers

We recommend the CR2 for trained rescuers as it provides real-time feedback, switches between adult and pediatric mode at the push of a button and can enable rescuer to do compression during the analysis, a feature unique to that device.

Budget solution

The HeartSine Samaritan 350P and the 360P are great budget options for AEDs. They are tough, lightweight and portable, which makes them incredibly reliable devices. The 350P is a semi-automatic AED, meaning it has a shock button the rescuer needs to press to deliver the shock if the AED advises so. The 360P is a fully automatic AED, so it does not required that the rescuer press a button, making it easier to use.

Wilderness and remote areas

We recommend the HeartSine Samaritan 500P for wilderness and remote areas due to the device being lightweight, dust-resistant, drop-resistant and it's ability to provide feedback to help rescuers provide high-quality CPR. It also is bilingual, making it easier to use by rescuers who may speak different languages.
